Safety:

The purpose of this machine is to cut material that has a wall thickness greater than 0.500” or a
diameter greater than 1.25”. If the material that needs to be cut does not meet this requirement, a hack-
saw will need to be used. Safety glasses should always be worn when using the machine. Gloves should
never be worn when using this machine. All loose clothing and accessories such as bracelets, large rings,
long sleeves, lanyards, belts, necklaces, large earrings, hair and hoodie strings shall be removed or
corrected prior to using this machine. Never lift the band-saw by the yellow wheel. This will cause the
tension of the blade to change which could lead to catastrophic failure of the machine. If the blade were
to break, immediately cease operation, turn off the machine and inform the lab monitor. Never attempt to
operate a band-saw whose blade has become compromised. If while cutting the part, the band saw begins
to bounce or jump, slow down the descent rate. The bouncing is caused by a section of the blade losing
its teeth and aggressive feeding will accelerate the degradation process.

Operation:

Scribe the material to the correct dimension. Be aware that when cutting thick pieces of material,
the horizontal band-saw has a tendency to cut at a slant. If many cuts have to be made at the same
distance, the part stop may be used to help production. Using the lifting handle, lift and bandsaw so that
your stock can comfortable fit under the blade. Use a brush to clean the tables of the bandsaw so the
stock can lay flat. Lay the part on the bandsaw table and push so that the stock is under the blade. Move
the clamping plate so that it is snug against the part. Using the lift handle, lift the bandsaw slightly and
squeeze the brake on the lifting handle to slowly bring the blade towards the part stopping above the
surface of the part. Ensure that the part’s scribe line is lined up with the blade. Adjust as necessary.
Once the part is correctly located, move the clamping plate so that it is securely holding the part lower the
clamp lock handle to the horizontal position. At this point the part stop may be set as necessary. It is
important that the part stop be raised when the band-saw is cutting through the part. Press the black
button to start the blade. Latch the lift lock with the green handle. Slowly lift the bandsaw by the lifting
handle and squeeze the brake and begin to slowly lower the blade unit it engages the part. Continue to
monitor the progress of the blade as it cuts through the material. Use the valve located next to the lifting
handle to adjust the rate of descent of the hydraulic lowering cylinder. Turning the valve to the horizontal
position will slow and stop the flow of hydraulic fluid while a vertical position will increase the speed at
which the horizontal band saw is lowered. Let the band-saw continue until the red stop button is pressed.
If the part shifts or rotates during the cut, release the brake and stop the bandsaw by pressing the red stop
button. Re-clamp as necessary or ask the lab monitor for help.
