How to use Canvas Gradebook

Click on Grades in the left hand menu. You'll see a full spreadsheet of the students in your class. When students click on that link, they'll see their individual grades.

About Grade Columns

When you create a graded item in Canvas (a quiz, assignment, discussion), Canvas automatically creates a new column in Gradebook for you. This is the only way new columns are added to Gradebook.

If you need to add a grade column for something that physically happens in class (a quiz) or is otherwise intangible (like participation) you would create a new assignment, but select No Submission so a "drop box" does not get attached to it.

About Releasing Grades

Canvas grades are automatically release (and emailed!) to students as soon as you input the grade. To change this behavior, click on the gear icon in the left hand corner and then choose the Grade Posting Policy tab. Select Manually Post Grades, then click Update.
