FAQ - All About Modules

1) Why should I use Modules? Links to an external site.

Modules organize your course content in a linear progression and provide a simple, step-by-step sequence for your students to follow. You can organize modules by weeks, days, topics, etc. Modules allow you to track student progress, create prerequisite activities, and share all your course content in one place.

2) How should I use Modules?

If you are using Modules, I recommend you turn off all other Canvas sections that students can access via Modules. For example, if all your assignments, quizzes, and pages are listed somewhere within Modules, then you don’t need to show them on the navigation bar. Follow these directions to disable certain sections in the navigation bar. The only sections you may want to leave enabled are Announcements, Modules, Grades, and the Syllabus.

3) How do I create Modules?

Go to the Modules section of your course, click on + Module and give it a name (e.g. Week 1). Then click on the  + button Links to an external site. under that and add your content. You can add existing content (e.g. an assignment or quiz you’ve already created) or you can create one from scratch. Content pages can be used to share additional information about the module and text headers Links to an external site. can be used to organize content within the module. Indent items under a text header for better flow.

4) How do I reorder Modules or content within them Links to an external site.?

Simply drag and drop the content to its desired spot. Alternatively, you can click on the Gear icon, select Move To, and choose the appropriate place.

5) How do I prevent students from seeing a Module and its contents until a certain date? Links to an external site.

Click on the Gear icon next to the Module and select Edit. Check the “Lock until” checkbox and choose the date that you would like the Module to be available for students to access.

6) How do I add requirements to a Module? Links to an external site.

After adding content to a Module, you can require students to complete certain requirements before moving on to the next item. These include requiring students to view an item, mark it as completed, contribute to a page/discussion, submit an assignment, or score a certain point value. To set up requirements, follow these instructions:

  • Click on the Gear icon next to the Module.
  • Select Edit.
  • Click on Add Requirement.
  • Select either “Students must complete all of these requirements” or “Students must complete one of these requirements”.
  • Set the requirements via the drop-down boxes.
  • When you have added all your requirements for the Module, click on Update Module.

7) How do I set up prerequisite Modules? Links to an external site.

If you have more than one Module in your course, you can set it up so students must complete one Module (e.g. Week 1) before advancing to the next one (e.g. Week 2). To do this, click on the Gear icon next to the last Module (e.g. Week 2) and select Edit. Click on “Add prerequisite” and select the Module that precedes it (e.g. Week 1). Then click on Update Module.

8) How do I view the progress of my students in Modules? Links to an external site.

To see how your students are progressing through your Modules or which Modules they’ve completed, go to the Modules section of your course and click on View Progress. Choose the student you wish to view on the right-hand side.

9) I want to create an extra/review Module that students are sent to only if they score low on a quiz/assignment. How do I do that?

You can create “checkpoints” that open up modules which provide additional help to the student.  Follow these instructions Links to an external site..

10) How do I set Modules as my course home page?

Go to the desired course and on the right-hand side, click on Choose Home Page. Select the radio button next to Course Modules and click Save.
