Sketch Visualization Ideas

  • Due Jan 30, 2024 by 11:59pm
  • Points 50
  • Submitting a file upload

The project for this course is something we'll build up incrementally, based on the datasets you pick. It's fine to pivot project ideas any time if you find a new dataset. The goal is to produce a series of visualization examples throughout the semester, culminating in one final interactive piece. The purpose of the project is that you all come away from the course with a decent portfolio piece that you can use to impress. This assignment is about sketching your vision for what your project can be.

Instructions

Produce 3 - 5 sketches of visualization ideas what your project might look like, given the dataset(s) and tasks you've identified. Try to use the new information from this week's lecture videos on how you can map attributes to marks and channels.

Consider the questions the visualization should answer, and/or the tasks it should enable the user to perform. Imagine the structure of the data table required to answer the question or perform the task, then try to imagine what some visualizations might look like based on that. You can also includes ideas for interactions, although we haven't discussed interactions much quite yet. Sketch your ideas out on paper with pen or pencil (or use design tools if you are familiar with them).

For process ideas, check out this Five Design SheetLinks to an external site. methodology (no need to follow this strictly, but it's a good reference for a process to try).

Submission

Scan or take a picture of your sketches, share them in Discord, and upload them as the submission for this assignment. Feel free to comment on the sketches of others and bounce ideas around!

Good luck!

Grading Criteria

Submit 3-5 (or more) sketches. -15 points per sketch if fewer than 3 are submitted. Each sketch must contain ideas for data visualizations.
